And God Said...
We use our words in a gazillion ways every day. The Bible says, "The good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and the evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For out of the overflow of his heart his mouth speaks." (Luke 6:45) So I think it's pretty safe to say that our words are an important part of our Spiritual life, not just our everyday life. This is one of the many reasons I decided to do a Bible study on words, starting in Genesis 1.
So, let's get started, eh? We've got a long way to go!
Numerous times throughout the Creation account in Genesis chapter 1, these phrases are seen:
- "God said"
- "God called…"
- "God blessed then said"
So it's pretty clear hear that God was speaking, or at the very least using words. But why? Why didn't He just wave His hand and make it so? Why did God "bless" the animals and humans? He's giving them a command that acts as a blessing, but since He basically wired the command into them, why say it/put it into words? And why name?
Maybe the answer is--words have power! We've heard this truth from other areas of Scripture, but here in Genesis 1, God shows it! Although our words are obviously not as powerful as God's, we are still made in His image.
Our words have the power to create or destroy; bless or curse; steward (ie. name) or neglect.
So this will be my premise for the rest of the study--that how we use or words is important because whenever we open our mouths, we will either be bearing God's image or the World's.
